GIFT, ZIFT, and Fertility Treatments

By Published  Views 0 Comments

Fertility treatments are of various types. In vitro fertilisation is one among them. GIFT is Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer. And ZIFT is Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer. These are two modified forms of IVF

GIFT and ZIFT Follow the Principle of IVF but Work Quickly

These two methods use the standard concept of IVF. The woman goes through a procedure to retrieve her eggs. The man provides sperm. These two are combined outside the woman’s body, under controlled laboratory conditions.

After observing for a few days, (3-5) the embryos are transferred into the woman’s body in IVF.

In GIFT, the sperm and the egg are retrieved, mixed, and inserted into the woman’s fallopian tube. Fertilisation might occur there.

In ZIFT, the eggs are fertilised in the lab, but the zygote is inserted inside the woman’s body within twenty-four hours of retrieval of sperm and eggs.

The Advantages of GIFT and ZIFT over IVF

People can call these procedures natural infertility treatments simply because they are closer to natural conception.

I say this because in both the methods, a day is at most the requirement in terms of time. In GIFT, fertilisation takes place inside the body and not in a laboratory.

Also, ZIFT places the zygote in the fallopian tubes of the woman and not in the uterus. Since a fallopian tube is the natural location of fertilisation in a female anatomy, it makes more sense naturally.

In the various types of infertility treatments, these two can be considered almost natural.

Problems That ZIFT and GIFT Can Deal with

GIFT and ZIFT are used in many cases as an infertility treatment for men and woman. For instance, in mild cases of infertility in men. Although, the sperm should have the ability to fertilise an egg for it to be used.

However, in the scenario where the fallopian tubes of the woman are damaged severely or contain abnormality, these two methods are helpless. Donor eggs can be used in those conditions to facilitate a pregnancy. Donor eggs are also helpful if the woman is over thirty-five years old as the egg quality starts deteriorating with age.

For These Two Fertility Treatments, Costs Are Higher Than They Are for IVF

GIFT and ZIFT are costlier than a traditional IVF process is. Although it does depend on the place, the centre, the medications, number of cycles, and other such factors.

Also, GIFT and ZIFT involve a surgical process unlike IVF which adds to the expense.

Success Rates

There is a 36:64 ratio for fruitful and unsuccessful pregnancies for these two methods respectively. Ectopic pregnancy, which is both immensely dangerous to the woman and a rarely occurring scenario counts for 1% of these fertility treatments.

Of all the pregnancies that hold, GIFT and ZIFT ensure healthy deliveries in a good number and multiple fetuses, twins for example, in a few cases.

Risks Are Involved Because of Laparoscopy

Internal organ puncture, pelvic infection, or any side effects because of anaesthesia are among the few risks that the process of retrieving eggs from the woman could inflict.
